OVERVIEW

Join Choco­tastery and USDA fund­ed Export­ing Qual­i­ty Pro­gram, imple­ment­ed by Inter­na­tion­al Exec­u­tive Ser­vice Corps, as we guide you through a Caribbean choco­late jour­ney to the Domini­can Repub­lic! Dur­ing this trip we will explore the excep­tion­al Caribbean fine fla­vor cacao grown by small farm­ers in lush trop­i­cal set­tings kissed by ocean breezes and nur­tured by rich, nat­ur­al soils in the Duarte Province.

We will meet the own­ers of cacao pro­duc­er, Öko Caribe, Adri­ano de Jesus Rodriguez and Gual­ber­to Ace­bey Tor­re­jon and will then dis­cov­er the diver­si­ty of fla­vors and be guid­ed through a choco­late tast­ing of craft choco­late bars from Domini­can Repub­lic Craft Choco­late Mak­ers: Def­i­nite Choco­late, Khao Caribe, Chin Chin Choco­late and Choco Punto.

We will get an exclu­sive tour of the Öko Caribe’s oper­a­tion and chat with their team and the choco­late mak­ers behind each of their choco­late bars. You will also gain knowl­edge of cacao pro­duc­tion and choco­late mak­ing in the Domini­can Repub­lic and gain some hands-on expe­ri­ence mind­ful­ly tast­ing choco­late through a guid­ed choco­late tast­ing in an effort to deep­en your appre­ci­a­tion and love for craft choco­late from the Domini­can Republic.

GIVING BACK

A por­tion of pro­ceeds will be donat­ed to the Öko Caribe orga­ni­za­tion to sup­port the 165 farm­ers and their fam­i­lies. Own­ers Adri­ano and Gual­ber­to have per­son­al rela­tion­ships with all of the farm­ers they work with, offer­ing them micro­fi­nance loans for cacao-relat­ed expens­es, as well as per­son­al loans for fam­i­ly emer­gen­cies or oth­er com­mu­ni­ty needs.

The USDA-fund­ed Export­ing Qual­i­ty Pro­gram is imple­ment­ed in the Domini­can Repub­lic by the Inter­na­tion­al Exec­u­tive Ser­vice Corps, a US based non­prof­it that seeks pri­vate enter­prise solu­tions to prob­lems of pover­ty in devel­op­ing coun­tries. The pro­gram is focused, in part, on sup­port­ing Domini­can cacao and choco­late pro­fes­sion­als to improve and pro­mote their prod­ucts for export. As a result of col­lab­o­ra­tive efforts, the DR recent­ly cel­e­brat­ed its first local fes­ti­val and choco­late awards.

ProDo­mini­cana is Domini­can Republic’s export and invest­ment cen­ter that pro­motes exports and invest­ment in the Domini­can Repub­lic. It pro­vides assis­tance to the export sec­tor through a pro­fes­sion­al staff com­mit­ted to offer­ing a high qual­i­ty and time­ly service.
