We are wired for con­tact, love, and con­nec­tion. When we are con­nect­ed, we are the hap­pi­est. And what­ev­er con­di­tions inter­fere with that cre­ate dis­func­tion. It’s just that sim­ple. The great philoso­pher Aris­to­tle wrote, “Man is by nature a social animal.”

Why then are we see­ing an epi­dem­ic of lone­li­ness, with 50 per­cent of peo­ple in the Unit­ed States say­ing they feel acute­ly lone­ly? At the same time, the rate of depres­sion is also the high­est it’s ever been.

Under­stand­ing the under­pin­nings of social con­nec­tions may be more impor­tant than ever, espe­cial­ly when we live in a soci­ety that pro­motes val­ues that con­flict with our nat­ur­al condition.
