Weeks after the dawn of a new multi-racial mass movement against police brutality and racism shook the political establishment to its core, Philly City Council approved a budget, with a mere $19M reduction in the police budget (and a $14M shuffle). This is a slap in the face of this movement.
Black and working class people will be the ones to bear the brunt of this budget, and lives will continue to be lost at the hands of the militarized Philadelphia Police Department, whose violence has been on full display over the past month of protests.
There is now a growing discussion about where the movement should go from here.
The still-massive Philadelphia police budget must be slashed by 50%, and this money needs to be reallocated to affordable housing, public education, and coronavirus relief. These resources, not police, are the gateway to public safety.
Join us for a discussion about how we bring this movement forward.
The meeting will be held at LOVE Park, and social distancing measures will be in place! Make sure to wear a mask and be prepared to stay 6 feet apart from others.
If it rains, the meeting will be held online and a Zoom link will be posted.
