Weeks after the dawn of a new mul­ti-racial mass move­ment against police bru­tal­i­ty and racism shook the polit­i­cal estab­lish­ment to its core, Philly City Coun­cil approved a bud­get, with a mere $19M reduc­tion in the police bud­get (and a $14M shuf­fle). This is a slap in the face of this movement.

Black and work­ing class peo­ple will be the ones to bear the brunt of this bud­get, and lives will con­tin­ue to be lost at the hands of the mil­i­ta­rized Philadel­phia Police Depart­ment, whose vio­lence has been on full dis­play over the past month of protests. 

There is now a grow­ing dis­cus­sion about where the move­ment should go from here. 

The still-mas­sive Philadel­phia police bud­get must be slashed by 50%, and this mon­ey needs to be real­lo­cat­ed to afford­able hous­ing, pub­lic edu­ca­tion, and coro­n­avirus relief. These resources, not police, are the gate­way to pub­lic safety.
