Toron­to-based elec­tron­ic DJ, pro­duc­er, and com­pos­er, Kate Mior, aka DJ HATE Mior, is a mul­ti-faceted per­former who ran away from the cir­cus to join the music indus­try. Tran­si­tion­ing from near­ly two-decades per­form­ing the solo street show titled ‘Madame Guil­lo­tine,’ Kate made a bold shift dur­ing the COVID-19 pan­dem­ic, to cre­ate a radio sta­tion on Twitch that blend­ed their phys­i­cal com­e­dy chops with a green screen. Kate’s shows ‘Lis­ten­ing Par­ty’ and ‘Day Drunk’ quick­ly gained trac­tion, cap­ti­vat­ing audi­ences worldwide. Amid lock­down, Kate explod­ed onto the scene with inno­v­a­tive per­for­mances that gar­nered inter­na­tion­al acclaim, lead­ing to guest appear­ances on fes­ti­val livestreams and musi­cal col­lab­o­ra­tions with estab­lished bands. Notably, Kate became the first DJ inter­viewed by Sounds and Shad­ows Mag­a­zine for their show ‘Iso­la­tion: the Sto­ry of the Life and Death of Ian Curtis.’ Dur­ing the pan­dem­ic, Kate vol­un­teered at the Cecil Com­mu­ni­ty Cen­tre in Kens­ing­ton Mar­ket, spin­ning tunes to boost morale dur­ing COVID-19 vac­ci­na­tions. Since lock­downs eased, Kate’s artistry has tak­en them to fes­ti­vals across Cana­da, the USA, and Europe, pre­sent­ing orig­i­nal music instal­la­tions and live remix­ing DJ sets paired with live animation. Kate’s notable per­for­mances include appear­ances at Ter­mi­nus Fes­ti­val in Cal­gary, Eis­bar Fes­ti­val in Toron­to, and as a guest pan­elist and head­lin­ing DJ at the Uncon­ven­tion in New Jersey’s leg­endary QXT’s night­club. They have spo­ken on pan­els cov­er­ing top­ics rang­ing from the his­to­ry of pol­i­tics in Indus­tri­al music to the Twitch rev­o­lu­tion online. Kate is also hon­oured to be a mem­ber of the Juno Awards Elec­tron­ic Album of the Year com­mit­tee, and a juror for the esteemed Polaris Prize. Kate also co-pro­duces Dark­ness For­ev­er, with their DJ part­ner Ver­nal Trash, curat­ing shows that show­case emerg­ing tal­ent in the dark­wave scene from across North Amer­i­ca and Europe, in addi­tion to their own club nights fea­tur­ing cut­ting-edge new dark dance music. In 2023, Kate launched their solo musi­cal project, MNNHVNTR, fur­ther expand­ing their artis­tic horizons.
